The regional growth of the automotive industry in the early 20th century, coupled with Toledo’s established presence as both a rail head of the Midwest and a shipping center of the Great Lakes, encouraged manufacturers and suppliers to locate production facilities in Northwest Ohio. The very icons of the Toledo Business Directory, Dana (1904), DeVilbiss (1888), Ford (1899), Libbey-Owens (1916), Champion Spark Plug (1907), and Toledo Scale (1901), were founding their companies on the banks of the Maumee River and petroleum refiners were attracted to the natural reserves of the Western Lake Erie Basin.
